Which trombone does Nils Landgren play?

A question I am often asked:

Which trombone does Nils Landgren play?

Nils is one of the biggest and best-known Yamaha endorsers for trombone. His red trombone immediately catches the eye, hence his nickname "Man with the red horn".

By the way: If you are a trombonist and don't know Nils Landgren yet, you should definitely check him out. A fantastic musician and excellent trombonist!

Before Nils started working with Yamaha in the mid-1980s, he played a Bach 12. This popular jazz model has a yellow brass bell, a yellow brass outer slide, a 12.7mm/.500" cylindrical bore and a 190mm/7.5" bell.

The surprising thing is: Nils' trombone is not one of Yamaha's two current top jazz trombones that are available in specialist shops. Neither the YSL-891Z nor the YSL-897Z.

Instead, Nils plays a completely different model.

This model is called YSL-893ZD and was only produced 10 times.
The trombone is a very unique creation. Unlike the Bach, this trombone has a conical slide. The upper inner slide tube is 12.7mm/.500", but the lower one is 13.34mm/.525". The material of the outer slide is nickel silver.
The bell, however, is 190mm/7.5" like the Bach.

Other special features are the replaceable, very open mouthpipe and the screwable bell.

The exciting question is whether Yamaha will be produced in larger numbers in the future.

By the way: The original Nils Landgren mouthpiece is one of the best mouthpieces for jazz trombone.

Luckily, when it comes to trombones, we have many great alternatives in our shop .
